Sewing and Accessory Creation
If you are into cosplay or costume creation, silicone has multiple uses in creating functional and beautiful pieces such as armor, jewelry, and other accessories.
Bracelets
If you are someone who wears bracelets or armor gauntlet pieces but struggles with them slipping or falling down, silicone sealant can help provide a. Adding silicone sealant to the part that touches the wrist helps keep the bracelet secure. Instructions for how to accomplish this project can be found here.
Bra Straps
Silicone can also help with keeping up bra straps for either costuming or everyday use! Apply silicone in thin dots, stripes, or just random smears on the upper part of your bra strap, where it touches the shoulder. For the best application, use a squeeze tube of silicone, such as our Silicone Depot Silicone Rubber Sealant instead of a caulking gun because it will provide more control for the smaller amount needed for the project.
If the straps of the bra do not stay at the proper length, put a bit of silicone right beside the plastic slider that adjusts the length. The silicone will keep the straps from pulling through the slider.
Making Resin Molds
Silicone molds can be used for a multitude of projects, including the creation of jewelry. This is perfect if you want a more natural, unique texture or edging around your pieces and do not want them to be symmetrical.
Just trace out a design and fill it in with the desired amount of silicone. It can be done in a bunch of funky patterns and textures to accomplish any effect you desire. Allow the silicone to dry before painting it or adding any hooks or clips.
Create Custom Stamps
If you need or want a particular stamp that is either hard to find or more than you want to pay, you could simply DIY it instead with some silicone.
Simply take any 2-dimensional image you would like to stamp, whether it is a drawing, simplistic photo or text, and place it under a piece of plexiglass.
Use a squeeze tube of 100% silicone to trace out your preferred image onto the plexiglass.
After the silicone has dried, take a small roller and roll your desired paint color onto your stamp. Then your stamp is complete and ready to be used!
Preserve Papers
If you are a lover of old books and old newspapers, then this DIY project may speak to you.
Take your paper of choice and place it onto a scrap piece of paper. This is to avoid getting the silicone on anything else aside from what you want to preserve.
Then, squeeze a large bead of 100% silicone caulk across the entire width of the top of the page. Afterward, take a straight piece of cardboard and spread the silicone down the paper so that a thin even layer of silicone covers the paper. Then let the silicone dry completely before proceeding to move or binding the page.
This technique is said to preserve the pages and make them flexible, waterproof and durable with a finished texture that feels like oilcloth.
Make Tipped Light Bulbs
Whether you want to make creative string lights or holiday ornaments, silicone sealant can be the perfect tool to help make unique hanging winter decorations. These are also a great cost saver since you will not have to buy these specialty bulbs yourself.
First, purchase some small LED bulbs to use for the project. Test each bulb to make sure it works. Even if the bulb is brand new, you do not want to put work into a bulb and then find out it never worked in the first place.
To make sure the silicone is warm before dipping, heat an empty pan on your stove top to a warm, medium setting. After the pan has reached the desired heat, turn the stove off. Lay a tube of silicone in the pan for three minutes then remove the tube from the pan.
Empty the silicone from the tube and squeeze the silicone into a throwaway bowl. Tap the bowl a few times to remove air bubbles, squeeze more in, and tap. Do not stir the silicone!
Wrap two turns of florist wire around the metal part of the bulb. Leave about a 2-inch tail of florist wire and then clip it. Bend the wire tail into a hook shape. This will give the bulb the dripping effect.
Dip the bulb into the center of the bowl filled with silicone. Make sure the entire bulb is covered, but do not cover any of the metal parts as it may cause the bulb to malfunction.
Pull the bulb out of the silicone, using a twisting motion as you lift. This helps the silicone form a ripple-type pattern. However, if you prefer a smooth surface pattern, lift the bulb out without twisting. Go slowly and even slow down as the tip of the bulb emerges. This will help you create a long tip.
Hang the bulbs on the clothesline so they can dry for approximately three hours. Use the wire to hang it by. Do not touch the tip as it dries, and do not try to expand the silicone during the drying process. It will do so on its own.
