Fun Spring Crafts to Try This Season
Mar 9th 2023
The dreary winter days are behind us, and springtime is approaching. Spring is the perfect time of year for family bonding — with the nice weather, families can visit parks together, picnic, or play outside.
However, spring family activities don’t have to always be outdoor ones! When May showers hit on a rainy day, you can celebrate the new season by trying out some fun and easy spring craft for kids. Read on for a list of spring crafts and ideas for kids (and adults too!)
Pom-pom Caterpillar
This crafting project combines two of the most fun crafting materials: googly eyes and pom-poms! If you have a little one with a soft spot for bugs or animals, this is a project they’ll love. Spring animals like bees, baby chicks, sheep, and bunnies can also be made using pom-poms, but they may require extra construction of small felt parts, such as a beak or ears. This project is pretty simple. For a caterpillar, all you need is some glue, pom-poms (both bigger and smaller sizes of varying colors), and googly eyes.
The largest pom-pom will be the caterpillar’s head, while the smaller ones will be its body. Kids can experiment with colors and make pink caterpillars, blue and orange caterpillars, or even make them rainbow-themed! The only problem with this project is that most glues don’t glue material on pom-poms very well. This issue can be easily solved with a dot of silicone adhesive connecting each pom-pom.
Toilet Paper Roll Craft Train
All you need is some paint, yarn, some toilet paper or paper towel rolls, and bottle caps for the wheels. This simple and fun spring project is ideal for toddlers and preschoolers. For this project, we suggest using pastel, spring colors for a spring theme! You can even go further and make a mini track for the craft train to roll on.
This can be as simple as laying down painter’s tape on the floor. Or, you could create a fake landscape using some expanding spray foam to make a faux train track and landscape. Kids can also bring this craft outside to play with, as long as they stay on the pavement and away from dirt or mud. The complete steps for this craft can be found here.
Paper Plate Bird’s Nest
Although a little more complicated than the other crafts on this list, a paper plate bird’s nest is an adorable and fun craft if you’re looking for spring craft ideas for older kids. The paper plate will serve as the nest.
Once colored in brown, have kids glue on long, crinkled strips of brown paper around the plate, forming a little nest. You can even have them run to the backyard and find some twigs to use too!
After that, all it takes is some light blue or white construction paper to cut out the eggs. Try speckling them with a pencil to make them robins’ eggs! Glue them down, and this easy-peasy project is finished.
Easy Paper Flowers
No spring art and craft list would be complete without a flower craft. Colorful flowers are a staple of spring, and if there’s no flowers around outside the house, kids can make their own! Gather up some colorful paper, scissors, and glue for this spring project.
There are a lot of different ways to make paper flowers, but it will be easiest for younger children to cut out petals individually and arrange them into a flower shape. For older kids, have them try a folding flower craft or a 3-D project like this one.
Make Spring Crafts More Fun With Silicone Sealant
Doing crafty projects with your kids is one of the best forms of family bonding time. Crafting with your child regularly not only is a great way to bond, but it also encourages their creativity and might inspire them to take up more complicated projects as they get older, like drawing/painting, sewing, woodworking, or even home or tech repair.
Doing these simple crafts plants the seed of creativity in your child’s mind. Often little crafts like these are the first time toddlers realize they can make or build things with their own hands.
