How to Repair Furniture with Polyurethane Foam
Feb 2nd 2023
Polyurethane foam has been growing in popularity over the last few years with DIYers and home improvement specialists alike, due to its insulation properties.
Polyurethane foam (sometimes called PU foam) is a type of insulation material and sealant that is used to fill gaps and assemble windows, doors, and other structures. It is a synthetic blend of organic compounds, meaning that it is made up of organic materials but is blended in a way that does not occur naturally.
But did you know that you can use polyurethane for furniture? One of the more popular polyurethane projects is furniture and appliance repair, where the foam will expand to add insulation. You can use it to update furniture and for helpful DIY furniture repair.

Here is how polyurethane foam can help repair furniture and provide insulation to your home.
Insulating Doors & Windows
One of the first polyurethane foam uses to consider is window and door insulation. Polyurethane insulating foam provides long-lasting, near-permanent thermal insulation for a home, preventing the need for repeated applications and energy savings will increase over time. Since it is watertight, airtight, and resistant to the outside elements, it is perfect for home insulation.
It's great stuff that you can use like a wood filler to repair and seal windows and doors. Make sure to select the right type of polyurethane for your project.
Useexpanding foam sealant to keep your home warm during the cold months and seal any gaps or cracks. Using a polyurethane foam board as a cushion at the lining of your doors and windows will protect them from the outdoor elements, and, due to its durability and flexible properties, it will last for quite a long time without the need for reapplying.
Insulate the Attic and Basement
Another place to use flexible polyurethane foam is in your basement or attic. Attic hatches, floors, and windows are among some of the most common areas for air leaks found throughout your home.
If you're experiencing any drafts, then it may be time to apply some sealant. Before you actually insulate the attic, it is important to know where any cold air is coming from.
Use expanding foam sealant to seal the majority of air leaks (up to ΒΌ inch in size) in an attic space. Use heat-resistant caulking for areas that may be near your chimney or water heater and weather-resistant sealant for any areas facing external walls.
Repairing Wood
For a full furniture makeover, consider foam. Of course, be mindful of the drying time when planning your repair for a piece of furniture.
Applying polyurethane foam is not difficult, but it is important to insure that the bare wood surface is free of wax, oil, dust, or other debris. Wipe the surface clean with a denatured alcohol-soaked rag. Make sure you know the difference between oil-based and cellulose insulation foam.
Warning: Denatured alcohol is a volatile substance and needs to be kept away from an open flame. Make sure your work area is well-ventilated while working on projects with it.
Allow the surface to dry; then wipe it with a dry cloth to remove any dust. Seal the wood with expanding foam sealer. The sealer soaks into the wood surface, allowing the following coat to flow evenly and get a stronger hold on the work surface.
To insure good adhesion, stay with the Silicone Depot Expanding Foam. Different brands are not always compatible and the layers may separate and peel in time. Open the can and stir the mixture to blend all the ingredients, ensuring that all the ingredients are mixed thoroughly. Never shake a can of polyurethane, as it will add air bubbles that will show up in the final finish.
