Shower Installation Tips for Contractors

Shower Installation Tips for Contractors

Aug 2nd 2023

Are you a general contractor planning to undertake home improvement projects, specifically bathroom remodeling projects that involve shower installation? If so, here are some essential tips to ensure a successful and efficient shower installation.

Assess the Project Scope

Before starting any work, carefully evaluate the scope of the project. Determine the type of shower your client desires, such as shower stalls or other variations. Understand the layout and dimensions of the bathroom to plan accordingly, even if you have custom-built shower experience.

Prepare the Shower Area

Once you have a clear understanding of the project, begin by removing the existing tile from the shower wall. A notched trowel can be helpful in this step, ensuring a clean and even removal of the old tiles. Once you remove the tile, you can really get to work!

Install the Shower Pan

The shower pan is another component that ensures proper drainage. Carefully position and secure the shower pan, aligning it with the drain location. Check for any leaks and make adjustments as necessary.

Take Your Time Installing Drain Pipes

A well-functioning drain system is essential for preventing water accumulation on the shower floor. Properly install and connect the drain pipe to the shower pan.

Choose Waterproof Wallboards

Some contractors use water-durable wallboards, but these are not entirely waterproof. While water-durable materials can resist water to some extent, truly waterproof ones are completely impervious to water. If the wallboard lacks waterproof properties, water vapor and moisture can cause damage that leads to mold and mildew growth. This damage may even result in the rotting of structural components, which could prove costly in the long run.

Experts recommend installing cement boards on the shower walls and floor. A cement board will provide a reliable surface for the tiles and prevent water damage.

Use a Strong Subfloor

Shower problems are likely if the shower system experiences movement due to an unstable substrate. For a waterproofing membrane to work effectively, proper support is crucial. Make sure the subfloor meets all TCNA (Tile Council of North America) standards when building your shower.

Install the Liner Correctly

A waterproof liner under a traditional shower floor acts as a barrier between the pre-pitch and mortar bed. You must install the liner correctly so it does not block the weep holes in the drain. Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions for all waterproofing products to achieve the best results.

Be Mindful of Weep Holes

Weep holes help drain water that may seep through grout or cracks between horizontal and vertical wall transitions. To prevent clogging, contractors can use weep guards or pea gravel around the drain barrel. It's essential not to cover the weep holes with mortar or thinset during the installation of the drain-clamping ring. Any residual pan liner or silicone should be cleared away from the weep holes.

Perform a Flood Test Before Installing Tile

Flood testing is the best way to detect any leaks before you install your shower system. Simply insert a pneumatic or mechanical test plug into the drain and fill the shower with water to just below the flood level or slightly below the curb. If you find any leaks, make the necessary repairs and retest the liner until the installation is completely leak-free. Now is also the perfect time to test how well the shower head and controls work.

Connect Hot and Cold Water Supply Lines

This step is easy to skip if you’re in a hurry. Connect the hot and cold water supply lines properly, ensuring there are no leaks or cross-connections.

Use Silicone Sealants

When it comes to sealing a shower, silicone sealant stands out as one of the best choices. Silicone creates a tight, moisture-resistant seal, keeping water out and preventing damage and leaks, ensuring a mold-free environment. With the ability to handle extreme temperatures, silicone is perfect for various bathroom applications. Silicone also won't crack or shrink over time, providing reliable sealing.

Use silicone sealants the right way

Step #1: Gather what you need

For this project, you’ll probably need:

  • Silicone sealant
  • Caulk gun
  • Caulk remover
  • Rags
  • Drop cloth
  • Utility knife
  • Razor scraper
  • Masking tape
  • Mineral spirits
  • Paper towels

Step #2: Remove old silicone sealant

Remove any old caulk with a utility knife. Make sure to cover the area with a drop cloth to keep things tidy.

Step #3: Eliminate any remaining adhesive

Use caulk remover to get rid of any remaining residue. Use a razor scraper to remove leftover adhesive. Clean the area with mineral spirits to avoid scratching.

Step #4: Clean the tiles

If there's any mold, clean it off with mold killer and dry the area thoroughly. If you’re replacing the tiles, make sure they’re clean, too.

Step #5: Put On masking tape

Apply masking tape along the corners and gaps you want to caulk.

Step #6: Apply silicone sealant

Cut the silicone nozzle, apply the sealant at a 90-degree angle, and fill the gap evenly.

Step #7: Smooth out the adhesive

Use your wet finger to even out the sealant, creating a rounded bead.

Step #8: Carefully detach the masking tape

Remove the masking tape while the sealant is still wet, taking it off at a steep angle.

Step #9: Let the sealant dry

Allow the sealant to dry for 24 hours before using the shower.
