How to Make Molds Out of Silicone Sealant

Aug 25th 2022

Silicone molds are very versatile with various applications, both fun and practical. Silicone molds can be used for soaps, candles, magnets, jewelry, and other DIY products. Food-safe silicone baking molds can even be used to make treats like candies and gummies. Making your own molds allows you to have the exact shape and size you need for your project. Thankfully, it’s not hard to make your own silicone molds at home. Here’s how to make a mold out of silicone sealant.

Making A Mold Out Of Silicone Sealant

Making a mold out of silicone requires a bit of preparation beforehand. You’ll likely have a few of the required ingredients around your house. However, items like silicone and a caulking gun might require purchase from Silicone Depot.

Silicone Sealant Mold Ingredients

These are the ingredients you’ll need to make a mold out of silicone sealant:

  • Water
  • Blue dish soap, like Dawn (Buy the cheapest kind possible, as you’ll use a lot)
  • 100% Silicone Sealant
  • Bowl, bucket, or pail
  • Caulking gun
  • Something you want to make a mold of
  • Gloves
  • Scissors/knife
  • Masking tape

You’ll also want to ensure that you have a ventilated area ready since the curing process can create strong fumes. In fact, it’s best to create your silicone mold outside or in a well-ventilated space.

Silicone Sealant Mold Making Process

Once you’ve prepared your ingredients and set them up in a ventilated area, you can get started on your silicone mold. Before you begin, slip on gloves and a long-sleeved shirt to protect your skin from potentially irritating materials. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making silicone sealant molds.

  1. Fill your bucket, bowl, or pail with however much water you’ll need according to the size of the object you’re molding. For small objects, use less water.
  2. Mix the water in the pail with a bit of blue dish soap. You don’t need to measure it out exactly, but you’ll want to use about 1oz of dish soap for every 16oz of water. If you find that this is too much water or that your mixture is too thick or thin, feel free to experiment with the ratio.
  3. It's now time to use your silicone sealant. Set it in the caulking gun and use it to fill the mixture with one tube of 100% silicone. You may need slightly more or less silicone depending on the size of your mold.
  4. Form the silicone into a ball using your hands, keeping it submerged in the mixture. Knead the silicone “dough” until it begins to get harder rather than sticky. This usually takes about five minutes. However, it’s best to make a decision based on the texture rather than time. Once it hardens, you know you’re kneading it correctly. At this point, you can sink whatever object you would like to make your mold out of into the silicone.
  5. Let your project cure for 1-2 hours, leaving the item in the mold. Before leaving your project alone to cure, be sure it’s watertight by adding an extra layer of silicone. As mentioned previously, it’s important to leave your project in a well-ventilated area to limit the fumes.
  6. After letting your project cure for a few hours, you can use your mold for any DIY projects your heart desires! You can re-use your mold more than once, so don’t be afraid to keep it after your initial use.

Things To Consider When Making Silicone Sealant Molds At Home

There are a few things you should know before you make your first silicone mold. Firstly, remember to purchase food-grade silicone sealant if you’re making a mold for cooking. Some silicone sealant isn’t safe to ingest, even after it dries.

On that note, you shouldn’t get any silicone sealant on your skin, especially if it’s sensitive. You should also avoid getting it in your eyes and wash your hands when you’re done with the project. Always wear gloves, eye protection, long-sleeved clothing, and NOSH-approved respiratory protection if need be.
