16 Supplies Every Contactor Needs on Hand

Apr 27th 2023

Despite advances in technology that allow for faster construction, a good toolkit will always be important.

While the tools for the job depend on the project, there are certain tools that are always good to have on hand. We’ve compiled a list of 16 tools every contractor needs!

Some of these are basic tools, while others are more specialized tools. Check out the top supplies every contractor needs on hand.

Hand Drill

Hand-held drills are an essential tool used to install holes, including nail holes, into many types of surfaces. While there are many types of drills, powered drills are the most common option, because they increase energy efficiency for workers. Most people will use a standard drill dryer for a DIY project, but they are also a helpful all-around tool.

Portable Concrete Mixer

This tool is a must for any construction site. It may not fit into your tool-belt, but it’s still very important. A concrete mixer provides fresh concrete on the worksite. Concrete mixers are low-cost tools that can help speed up work processes. If you manage a group of workers, make sure they understand how much concrete to make and how it’s done. Generally, it’s a good idea to make 10% more than you think you’ll need.

Stud finder

A stud finder locates the wall studs behind home insulation and wiring. Studs are better equipped for holding heavy objects, so they are good places to hang lighting fixtures, art, or shelves. While seasoned contractors know the importance of finding a good stud, doing so is still a challenge. Save time and quickly locate studs with a stud finder.

Sledgehammer

Sledgehammers work like a charm for demolition, but they also have other uses. They smash rock into concrete and push wooden walls into place. Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from debris while using a sledgehammer. One of the best all-around sledgehammers is the ESTWING Sure Strike Hammer. It has a ribbed-grip fiberglass handle to absorb shock and increase comfort. While only a 3-pound hammer, it’s still an essential tool for any home repair kit.

Crowbar

When you need to pull objects apart or tear out nails, a crowbar is a tried and true tool for the job. Titanium crowbars are lighter and non-magnetic, so they aren't great for all work sites. A stell bar offers more force for tougher projects.

Wrenches

Wrenches are staples in home improvement. It’s always good to own a diverse set of them to squeeze different types of screws. Another option is an adjustable wrench that adjusts to different sizes. Three types of wrenches to consider include:

  • Open-ended spanner: Has a U-shaped opening that grips both sides of the fastener.
  • Combination wrench: Has an open and box end
  • Ratchet wrench: Move the tool back and forth without losing your grip or having to re-adjus

Air Filter

You must put the safety of your construction workers first. Employees are exposed to dust and debris that may affect their lungs over time. Not only is this bad for your employees, but it could also lead to them calling out more often. An air filter can fix this issue by removing those harmful particles from the air. We recommend trying the BlueDri BD-AS-550-BL Negative Machine Airbourne Cleaner. It's easy to use, works well, and is well worth the price tag. Invest in your employees and keep them healthy.

Expanding Foam Sealant

Expanding foam sealant is incredibly useful for interior and exterior projects. Expanding foam fills gaps and assembles windows, doors, and other structures. It’s also a common insulative material for homes. Not only is it easy to use, but it also creates air-tight barriers. If you buy expanding foam, make sure you go for a closed-cell foam. Closed cell foams are stronger and more rigid. This makes for a firmer, stronger seal on structures. We recommend our very own Expanding Foam Sealant. It comes with a nozzle for precise application! Order it in bulk for your whole team.

Aerial Tool Apron

Carry all your tools with this tool belt from Bucket Boss. Snug and secure, this belt provides plenty of cushioning for comfort and tons of room for gear. It comes with 29 large and medium pockets. It has three pockets with enough space to hold a framer's square, pliers, a screwdriver, and other tools. The medium-sized pockets can hold tape measures, plumb bobs, and boxes. All pockets are barrel-bottomed. This tool belt fits waist sizes up to 52 inches and comes in a sleek black color.

Utility knife

Utility knives are an essential construction tool for their versatility. They can cut through plastic, cardboard, rubber, and even some types of metal. They are also designed with safety in mind. Many utility knives are retractable to prevent accidental injuries. Some models also have a locking mechanism to keep the blade concealed while you aren’t using it. The sharp, precise blade makes them great for cutting surfaces or breaking down boxes.

Tape measure

There’s one simple way to save a lot of time and money on your projects — take accurate measurements! Inaccurate measurements waste entire projects. In extreme cases, inaccurate measurement forces you to restart an entire project. Making precise measurements during the early stage of a project is key. Having a tape measure with you — as obvious as the tool is — is an essential for project accuracy. Equip your workers with a durable, high-quality tape measure.

Silicone Sealant

Another useful tool for home improvement is silicone sealant. Silicone sealant fills gaps, cracks, and holes in all types of surfaces. In construction, they’re used to seal doors, windows, and eaves. They also join masonry to concrete or stucco. What makes silicone sealant such a popular sealant is its durability and versatility. Silicone sealant gives a watertight seal and can withstand high temperatures. There are different types of silicone sealant, so make sure you use the right kind. For indoor projects, you’ll want something water-resistant like the Kitchen & Bath Mildew Resistant RTV Silicone Sealant.

Caulking gun

You should use a caulking gun to apply silicone sealant, especially for industrial projects. A caulking gun ensures a smooth, seamless sealant application. Simply pull the trigger and apply pressure. The gun then applies a stream of sealant. There are many types of caulking guns, but here are some qualities every good one needs:

  • Puncture tool that retracts out of the way to avoid getting sealant on hands
  • Cordless (optional, but a great feature)

Wheelbarrow

While not necessary for minor repairs, a wheelbarrow is handy for larger projects. Wheelbarrows are perhaps the biggest instance of an old classic that will always be helpful. Although invented as far back as 118 AD, wheelbarrows are still used on worksites everywhere. Nowadays, there also are motorized and electric wheelbarrows. Poly wheelbarrows are the popular choice for most contractors. Lightweight but tough, they can carry loads up to 300 pounds.

Line levels

Line levels help constructors know whether a line is straight or not. This is especially helpful during floor, tile, window, and door construction. There are two common types: the spirit line level and the laser line level. The spirit line level consists of a vial filled with liquid. If the line isn't straight, the line will shift to the left or right. Spirit line levels are great for indoor projects and hanging items on a wall. Construction sites use the laser line level. Because it projects in a straight line across surfaces, the laser line level is more precise.

Pliers

If pliers aren't already a staple in your tool kit, they should be. Pliers are designed so that squeezing the handles amplifies the user's strength. With the help of pliers, workers can bend, pull, cut, and grip different materials. Diagonal pliers are best for cutting wire, screws, and nails. Long-nose pliers can reach tight nooks and crannies, and combination pliers are best for electrical work.
