Easy Home Improvement Projects for Winter
Dec 28th 2022
Winter often means more time inside, which is why winter is a great time to explore home improvement projects for the inside of your home.
Home improvement tasks are not only great ways to impress family and friends when they come over to celebrate the holidays, but they also can boost the appeal of your home on the real estate market. Many DIY projects save you money compared to hiring a contractor, and there are plenty of simple projects to tackle.
When looking to do winter home improvement projects, unless living in a warm climate, avoid doing work outdoors as cold temperatures and inclimate weather can push back progress. Save outdoor projects for the spring and summer when the climate is more forgiving.
Look indoors first and see what areas of the property could use some refurbishing or updating.
These are four projects we recommend trying yourself as they are easy to do and cost-effective!
Update Interior Light Fixtures
Time is more likely spent in the comfort of the home during the winter months than in the summer. Light fixtures can be a mainstay in a home’s style and speak volumes about the overall design vision of the property.
However, with more indoor lights being used, it is likely that energy bills will also increase due to the extended lighting that may be used for outdoor and indoor holiday decorations.
One cost and energy-efficient measure is to invest in LED lights, as the can last 25 times longer than traditional light bulbs while using 90% less energy. By using these kinds of lights, one can bring down their overall utility bill by a significant amount while also having lights that will last into the summer months.
These lights are available in various sizes and formats and can be located at just about any home improvement store. This also means you do not have to throw out any light fixtures you love in your home, but these minor modifications can help keep costs down and lights on!
Reseal Kitchen and Bathroom Faucets
Properties located in colder climates face an increased risk of damage to their water supply due to the freezing temperatures that winter can bring. One of the biggest concerns homeowners should be aware of is freezing temperatures causing their water pipes to freeze.
One way to avoid freezing pipes is to ensure that all cracks and holes are properly sealed to avoid freezing water. Resealing areas of high water usage, such as the bathroom and kitchen is important to ensure the protection of waterlines.
Overall, for most projects being done in the bathroom and kitchen, such as filling gaps and sealing cracks in countertops, sinks, and tubs, 100% silicone will both last longer and look better. Make sure to use a Mildew resistant RTV Silicone Sealant to avoid mold production and ensure an airtight seal.
Repaint Rooms That Need a Refresh
Adding a fresh coat of paint can be both a fun project and an excellent time saver when you do it yourself. Painting rooms or furniture yourself is a great cost-saving technique as the paint is readily available in stores and basic painting is not a difficult task.
Areas that could be good for a new paint job in the winter include guest rooms, offices, garages, bathrooms, kitchens, and any other rooms that could foreseeably not see a lot of use for several days of painting.
More difficult techniques such as precision painting or painting a more intricate design require a lot more expertise and may need to be practiced before attempting to do it on your own. Stick to a job that requires simplicity to start off with.
Many paint jobs will require multiple coats of paint for true opacity and fullness in color saturation. Invest in a good base primer for wall paint and be patient as each individual coat dries before moving on to the next layer.
Insulate Drafty Areas
One side effect of the winter months is the drafty feeling that can come inside when doorways, windows, and other areas are improperly sealed or need resealing. Eliminate the draft by adding insulation to these areas.
One easy and inexpensive way to do this is to use insulating spray foam. Our commercial-grade expanding foam sealant is a unique closed-cell product that helps keep air and moisture out while keeping the inside of the home warm and comfortable.
Closed cell foams are more rigid than open cell foam which creates a better seal. This expanding foam is excellent for filling cracks, sealing voids, and insulating space around wires, rim joists, attics, and basements. It comes with an applicator nozzle for precision application and even distribution so it can be used by novices easily!
This is great to use around windows and doors as it provides a tight seal without closing off access to these important entranceways. Another way to insulate windows is by adding weather stripping.
Weatherstripping is a material used to seal air leaks and keep the freezing cold outside while keeping warm air in. It is easy to install weatherstripping around windows, doors, and other places to block drafts easily. It is a great DIY project to complete when looking to keep the inside of your home warm.
