Silicone sealant is waterproof, making it the prime selection for basic bathroom renovations. Applying silicone sealant can intercept mold growth, prevent water damage, and repair minor damage. Plus, many silicone sealant products are readily accessible and affordable for general home improvement projects. If you’ve been interested in waterproofing your bathroom, silicone sealant may be the perfect solution!

Benefits of Silicone Sealants

Silicone sealants are fantastic for kitchens and bathrooms for their water-resistant properties. Its rubbery material makes it strong, flexible, and long-lasting. Plus, silicone technology continues to improve, making sealants more effective than ever! Water-resistance aside, silicone sealants come with several benefits that greatly improve your home. Among these includes energy efficiency since sealants can fix minor holes and leaks around your home.

Using Silicone Sealant in the Bathroom

Whether you live in an older home or want to lightly renovate your bathroom, applying silicone sealant is a great way to make some minor repairs. As previously mentioned, silicone sealant is moisture resistant, making it perfect for bathrooms. While this is impressive on its own, it should also be mentioned that its materials also make it mold resistant. Applying silicone sealant to cracks, gaps, or areas with a lot of moisture can significantly increase mold resistance.

On top of mold prevention, silicone sealants are capable of withstanding extreme elements. This makes the materials last through changing temperatures, a significant benefit for showers. Silicone sealant is also flexible, making it capable of expanding and contracting without damage.

Purchasing the Materials

If you’re thinking about purchasing silicone sealant for your bathroom, it’s important to keep a few details in mind. For one thing, you need to make sure that you acquire silicone sealant specifically for kitchens and bathrooms. No two sealants are the same, so it’s important to purchase the correct materials. Don’t forget to order a high quality caulk gun and any other tools you need to complete the project! You can certainly apply silicone sealant without a caulk gun, but it may be much more difficult and require more time.

Applying Silicone Sealant

To apply silicone sealant to your bathroom, there are a few steps you need to take first. Before you do anything, take a moment to carefully read the instructions on the container. From there, take necessary precautions by ventilating the area and wearing basic safety equipment (i.e. gloves). Using a utility knife, remove any old and/or cracked silicone before applying fresh caulk.

Prepare the area with painter’s tape to keep the rest of your bathroom clean. Rid the area free of any moisture, otherwise the caulk won’t bind to the surface. From there, carefully squeeze the caulking gun until a small amount of sealant begins to appear. Continue applying pressure until you’ve lined it up with your preferred crevice. Continue this process once the caulk is pushed away from the tube. Use this to apply beads that are about the length of a pencil.

To ease the process, consider starting a bead on one corner of the area you’re applying sealant to and another on the other side. Repeat the process you started until both beads meet in the middle of the designated area. Once this is completed, add some water to your finger to remove any extra caulk or adjust the application. Proceed to remove the painter’s tape and let the silicone sealant dry completely.
